Research and Development

The UKK Institute’s research and development projects generate information on the health benefits and promotion of physical activity. The strategy that we are realising in 2009—2013 is called Program for health-enhancing physical activity.

Monitoring the physical activity and fitness of the population

Physical activity has a positive effect on one's health and functional capacity. The UKK Institute monitors and evaluates the amount of physical activity and changes in the level of physical fitness within the population.

The UKK Institute develops and selects reliable and valid evaluation methods for monitoring and measuring physical activity and health-related fitness. Our target group is the entire population: children, young people, adults and senior citizens.

The UKK Institute encourages professionals to use uniform methods in evaluating physical activity and fitness when delivering health promotion and physical activity services.

Promoting safe participation in physical activity

Exercise-related injuries may reduce the health benefits of physical activity. Following professional guidelines can reduce the harmful effects of exercise.

The UKK Institute develops procedure models aimed at increasing the level of safety during exercise. These models can be used by health promotion and sports organizations. The goal is that the professionals will be able to recognize he risk factors associated with exercise and promote the prevention of related accidents typical to different stages of life.

One of our key goals is to prevent senior citizens from being injured due to falling accidents.

Promoting health-enhancing physical activity

Increasing physical activity is one of the main bjectives in the prevention and treatment of lifestyle-related diseases.

The UKK Institute studies and develops the performance and effectiveness of procedure models and methods used in physical activity counseling within the healthcare and fitness industries.

Along with increasing the personal knowledge and abilities, we need to create an environment that encourages the public to participate in physical activities that promote health. Special attention is paid to the activity levels and condition of sedentary populations.

Exercise trials give information on the appropriate dosage and suitability of physical activity for different groups.
